Tourism vastly contributes to the economic livelihood of a place. As it progresses, so does the developmental aspect of the State. However, the downside of tourism is its encroachment on the resources and space of Nature & Wildlife. From an ecological point of view, Tourism puts enormous pressure on the Natural resources of a region; this includes endangering species and their habitat, which is why National Parks have been set up to conserve the natural environment and preserve the species at the brink of extinction.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kashmir is privileged with abundant natural resources and dense forests. Some breeds found here are rare and exotic such as the Snow leopard, Himalayan Black Bear and the famous State animal \u2018Hangul\u2019 (Musk Deer). National Park plays a significant role in conserving the wide-ranging species, exquisite flora & fauna, and wildlife in Kashmir. In these reserved areas, no human activity or outside interference is allowed. However, tourists can visit these National Parks for educational, cultural and recreational purposes. Following are the National Parks in the Valley where you can stop by for a quick detour while on your Kashmir trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Dachigam National Park, Srinagar<\/h1>\n\n\n

Exploring the city of lakes (Srinagar) should not go without visiting the Dachigam National Park. Apart from being a famous destination for nature lovers, the history of its origin is also fascinating. Dachigam, meaning ten villages, is how it is formed after ten villages were relocated to conserve the integrity of the ecosystem. Sprawled over an area of 141 sq. km, the National Park is situated 22 km from Srinagar. The park is extremely rich in flora and fauna. Expect to see the famous Kashmir stag Hangul, Leopards, Himalayan Black Bears, Golden Eagle, Kashmir Flycatcher, Cinnamon Sparrows and the highlights of the flourishing vegetation, including Apricots, Chestnut, Walnut, Apple, Chinar, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The largest National Park in India was set up to protect the dwindling wildlife in the region of Ladakh. And so the Hemis National Park was established in 1981. The Park, lying North of the Himalayas and bounded by the River Indus, covers most of the alpine vegetation, including alpine tundra, alpine shrublands & meadows, and pine forests, with the mountainous area divided into two regions: upper and lower. In this protected area, the species that comprise the major attractions are the rare Snow Leopard of the Shang Valley, Bharal (Blue Sheep), Ibex, Argali (Great Tibetan Sheep) and more. Besides, the area is also a bird watcher’s paradise. Here you can spot rare birds such as  Red Mantled RoseFinch, Black Throated Thrush, Great Grey Shrike, Robin Acceptor, Spotted Flycatcher, Red Flanked Blue Tail and Great Nose Finch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As is apparent from the name, Kishtwar National Park lies in the Kishtwar district of Jammu & Kashmir. Rivers such as Kiar, Nath, and Kibar run from North to South-West direction in this National Park spread over 400 sq. km. Naturally, it is a hub of nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts on their trekking trails. With designated camping and a plethora of alpine species of wildlife and avifauna, Kishtwar National Park is a top tourist destination. Mammals found here are Snow Leopard, Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan Brown Bears, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salim Ali was a birdwatcher, a renowned one. His passion for birdwatching popularised ornithology in India. He is also known as the Birdman of India for doing systematic studies and surveys on Birds and writing about them extensively. The eponymous National Park is a tribute to his contribution towards documenting the nameless & unknown species of birds and bringing to light their existence in this world. Indubitably, in this Park, you can witness a wide variety of birds, including Ringdove, Kingfisher, Paradise Flycatcher, Himalayan Monal, and Himalayan Snowcock, etc., besides animals such as Snow Leopard Musk Deer and Himalayan Black Bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home to species of 120 birds and 20 mammals, Kazinag National Park lies in the Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir. The Park, sprawled over an area of 160 sq. km, is popular for housing Himalayan Musk Deer and Markhor. Open on all days, the National Park also houses species of animals such as Leopard, Himalayan Marmot, Kashmiri Flying Squirrel, Yellow Throated Martin and more.
